Welcome to Nokogiriyama, a hidden gem nestled in southern Chiba, Japan.

Our first stop is the Nihonji temple, a sacred site dating back to 725, originally established for the Tentai-shu Buddhism sect and later adopted by Shingon-shu and the current Soto-shu.

As you enter, your eyes are drawn to the magnificent 30-meter tall Buddha statue, known as "Yakushiruri Kounyurai". The sheer size and intricate detail of this statue, crafted for the healing of the sick people as well as wounded samurai warriors, leave a lasting impression. Notice how its hand delicately holds a medicine jar, symbolizing hope and restoration.

Now it's time to start climbing, but there's no need to worry. Despite initial apprehensions, the ascent is more akin to a brisk walk up a hill than a daunting mountainous trek. My grandmother, nearing 80 years old at the time, conquered the stairs with ease, proving that age is no barrier to exploring the wonders of Nokogiriyama. Plus they have a ropeway too.

Adult: one-way 650 JPY, round-trip 1200 JPY

As you ascend, be greeted by the ethereal presence of 1200 Rakan statues lining the path. Crafted over two decades by 27 skilled artisans, these statues exude a sense of mystery, with some missing their heads due to historical religious persecution during the Meiji period. Legend has it that one of these statues might bear a resemblance to you and has the power to grant wishes to those who discover it.

Upon reaching the peak, you will encounter another breathtaking view: a majestic 30-meter tall stone sculpture of Kannon-sama, the goddess of compassion. Built from 1960 to 1966, this sacred statue is worshipped for safeguarding voyages on land, sea, and in the air.

Just compare the size of the statue to that of humans!

Near the statue lies the intriguing "Hell Peeping Point", a fenced spot offering panoramic views of Tokyo Bay, the peninsula, and on clear days, even the majestic Mt. Fuji in the distance. It's a thrilling yet spine-chilling experience that promises to leave you breathless with wonder.

Dive into the heart of Nokogiriyama, where past meets present, and each step leads to a new revelation. Find solace in the serenity of the temple, marvel at the grandeur of the statues, and embrace the enigmatic allure of this hidden gem in southern Chiba.

Following our visit to Nokogiriyama, we spent the night at Hiruta, a cozy seaside Onsen-ryokan, where we were treated to a stunning sunset and indulged in a seafood feast.
